Description
Brandon 1789-A Vilage Fire by John E Basham
Some years ago while abstracting title deeds to land in Brandon I came across two references to a fire there in 1789. At that time this small parish of some thousand souls in the extreme north-west corner of Suffolk was poised to become the centre for the British gunflint trade.
On further investigation a full account of the fire was found in the Bury and Norwich Post, and inventories of losses and other deeds were located. Very little has been published about fires of this size and the Brandon records are so complete that it seemed worthwhile to bring this subject to a wider audience. This book is the result.
It is hoped that those with a general interest will learn something of the dangers of past village life and those investigating fires in their own village will find some help within these covers.
