Taffy’s War-The Story of Prisoner No: 259175 As Told by Irene Grimwood
On July 28 1941 Herbert Noel ‘Taffy’ Grimwood set sail with the 58th Suffolk Medium Regiment to join the British Forces at war. From Sidi Omar to Tobruk he fought until in June 1942 he was captured. Then began almost three years of prison camps, ranging from the heel of Italy up to Cologne in the middle of Germany. When Taffy was first captured he started a diary, detailing the day-to-day life of a POW – the efforts to keep fit, to get enough to eat and, in general, to stay alive. On 8th May 1945 he walked out of the prison camp, a free man at last. This is a story of one msan doing his duty and trying to live as a prisoner of war.
