Description
The Roman era in the area of modern Wales began in 48 AD, with a military invasion by the imperial governor of Roman Britain. The conquest was completed by 78 AD, and Roman rule endured until the region was abandoned in 383 AD.
The aim of the present work is to attempt an up-to-date review and interpretation of the evidence relating to the Roman Military Occupation of Wales on the lines long since laid down by the late F Haverfield and my old teacher Sir Mortimer Wheeler. The work, which owes its inspiration to Sir Mortimer Wheeler, is based on a field survey of Roman military remains in Wales carried out with the aid of grants from the University of Wales and the National Museum of Wales.
