Description
Art in the Christian World, 300-1500 | A Handbook of Styles and Forms byYves Christe and Tania Velmans and Hanna Losowska and Roland Recht.
This book covers Early Christian, Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic art in four main sections, tracing the evolution of Christian art through its many vicissitudes and in its many guises to the waning of Gothic in the 15th century. Although many of us would feel that we are reasonably familiar with the subject, people with a full awareness of the breathtaking range of styles, forms and artistic media that were involved and of the complex relationships that existed between them – notably between Romanesque and Gothic – are few and far between. This handbook, which is designed to be suitable for taking on journeys, provides us with a guide through a fresh artistic labyrinth: by analysis and comparison of the main elements of style and form in different works, we can begin to acquire a sound basis for classifying and evaluating them, and for appreciating their significance and subtleties.
